Normandy Beach Race

The first edition of the Normandy Beach Race was held in Ouistreham in 2019. Inspired by the popular sand races in the United States and Great Britain, this competition is reminiscent of the Goodwood Revival with its friendly, quirky, and convivial atmosphere.

Nostalgic pleasures

The Normandy Beach Race is a retro race, but it's more than that. It's a true homage to the competitions of the 1940s and 1950s when young enthusiasts, having recovered and restored old Fords, competed on the sand in 200-meter sprints. As you can see, this unique motor sport from Uncle Sam's country is inspired by the legendary "Race of Gentlemen," a race reserved for pre-1935 hot rods and pre-1947 motorcycles.

A concept "made in the USA"

The idea of organizing such a beach race in France comes from four enthusiasts. In 2016, they participated in a similar race in California and immersed themselves in a movie-like setting in which they were also the actors. Upon their return to France, they quickly wanted to recreate this exhilarating experience on a French beach. Thanks to their contagious passion, motivation, and tenacity, they successfully met the challenge, and the Normandy Beach Race has become a legendary auto/moto event in France and abroad.

Starting with a bang

The race is organized in the historical context of the Franco-British landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944, in Ouistreham. On the famous Sword Beach, in the heart of Calvados, participants, mechanics, volunteers, race officials, Grid Girls, supporters, and spectators are all dressed in period costumes, similar to the Goodwood Revival.

An international event

Unlike in the United States, where only American manufacturers are allowed, all brands of cars, motorcycles, and even tractors and other unusual motorized vehicles are welcome in Ouistreham. Additionally, the number of Belgian, Spanish, German, Danish, Dutch, and (of course) English participants increases each year, ensuring the international reach of this unique event in France.

Event schedule

The program includes several 200-meter standing start races, featuring vintage, hybrid, and modified vehicles and motorcycles. On the sand, two drivers compete head-to-head in parallel sprints. Several runs are possible throughout the day, giving each participant another chance to win. The cars, motorcycles, and other machines are meticulously selected according to precise criteria, including the style of the era, power, or character of the vehicle.

The post-race festivities take place under a tent on the beach, near the paddock and track. Participants gather around a vehicle exhibition, several musical performances, catering services, and photo sessions. Finally, an awards ceremony concludes this colorful day.

Attention enthusiasts: the next event won't be until 2025! The event, which drew nearly 100,000 people in 2023, will now be held every two years. Given the resounding – and unexpected – success of the last edition, the current association of 70 volunteers is no longer sufficient. The organizers are therefore compelled to evolve towards a more professional and financially solid organization.
